UEFA has extended Russia’s football ban

Vyacheslav Koloskov, Honorary President of the Russian Football Union, has commented on UEFA’s decision to extend the suspension of Russian clubs from international tournaments. According to him, Russia had expected a different decision and had hoped for the lifting of restrictions.
“No one expected UEFA to extend the ban. Everyone was expecting a different decision – the lifting of sanctions and restrictions,” Koloskov told Russian media.
At the same time, he acknowledged that the reason for the suspension was Russia’s war against Ukraine, which the Russian authorities continue to refer to as a “special military operation”. According to Koloskov, UEFA and FIFA explain the decision by citing the inability to guarantee safety during matches.
“As the special military operation continues, the decision will remain in force until it ends,” he said.
Russia out of international football from 2022
FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from tournaments following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As a result, the Russian national team has missed out on the 2022 World Cup, Euro 2024, the 2026 World Cup and several seasons of the Nations League. Russian clubs are also barred from participating in the Champions League, the Europa League and other UEFA-organised tournaments.
