3 May 2026 — St Theodosius of the Caves Day: what you need to know
This is reported by UNIAN
The life of the saint
The Venerable Theodosius was born in Vasyliv near Kyiv. His path to faith was not an easy one: from childhood, the young man aspired to monastic life, despite his mother’s fierce opposition. At the age of 24, he secretly went to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, where he became a disciple of the Venerable Anthony. During his time as abbot, Theodosius not only expanded the monastery but also introduced a strict rule that became a model for other monasteries. Despite his high rank, he remained a model of humility: he worked in the bakery, chopped wood and carried water alongside the ordinary monks. The saint was also known for his firm stance in defending those unjustly condemned, unafraid to expose the mistakes of the rulers of his time.
Traditions and folk customs
Among the people, this day is known as Martha the Planter.
-
Work in the vegetable garden: Traditionally, cabbage seedlings and other vegetables are planted today. It was believed that this should be done by women — according to popular belief, this ensured the plants’ resistance to disease.
-
Spring menu: Housewives prepared dishes using the first vitamin-rich greens, in particular ‘green’ borscht with sorrel and nettles.
-
Prayer: Usually today, believers ask Saint Theodosius for health for their loved ones, help in times of trouble, and the strengthening of spiritual strength.
Main prohibitions of the day
To avoid bringing misfortune upon the family, certain restrictions were traditionally observed on 3 May. In particular, it was considered inauspicious to begin major construction or renovation work — such projects could drag on or result in financial losses. The day is also considered unlucky for major purchases.
Particular attention was paid to family relationships: arguments between spouses on this day are considered a very bad omen, promising discord for a long time to come. Therefore, it is recommended to spend the day in peace, working the land and living in harmony with loved ones.
