On this day, believers honour the martyrs who suffered for their Christian faith, and folk traditions associate the date with weather signs and certain warnings.

On Saturday, 7 March, according to the new church calendar, Ukraine honours the holy martyrs Basil, Ephrem, Capito and other Christian ascetics.

These saints are considered examples of devotion to the Christian faith. In the history of the Church, they are known as ministers who, despite persecution, remained faithful to their calling and accepted martyrdom for their faith.

The holy martyrs Basil, Ephrem, and Capiton lived at a time when Christianity was severely persecuted. They served in the Church, conducted divine services, instructed believers, and preached the Gospel.

Their lives were connected with prayer, fasting, and helping people. Due to their active spread of the Christian faith, they became targets of persecution by the authorities, who viewed the new religion as a threat.

Despite torture and humiliation, the clergy did not renounce their faith. Their martyrdom became a symbol of devotion to Christian values and an example of spiritual resilience for future generations.

Folk omens on 7 March

In folk tradition, this day is also associated with weather omens:

  • a light pink or golden dawn means warm and fair weather;
  • if pigeons coo and titmice settle on their nests, warming is expected;
  • Fog in the morning or during the day may indicate a wet summer.

What is not recommended to do on this day

According to folk beliefs, on 7 March it is undesirable to:

  • arguing or sorting out relationships, as conflicts may drag on;
  • replant flowers or plant new plants, as they may not take root well.

What is recommended

According to folk observations, water often drips from roofs in early March. In ancient times, this was seen as a symbolic cleansing, so it was recommended to devote the day to prayer, reflection and spiritual purification.

Memorable dates on this day

Several international dates are also celebrated on 7 March:

  • Be Heard Day;
  • International Open Data Day (first Saturday in March);
  • World Information Architecture Day;
  • Birthday of the Telephone;
  • Plant Energy Day.
