Second fatal incident this year
This is the second fatal shark attack in Australia since the start of 2026. In January, a boy died in Sydney Harbour following a shark attack. According to statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, around 20 shark attacks are recorded off the country’s coast each year. Such incidents most frequently occur on the east and south-east coasts. Police have stated that the circumstances surrounding the man’s death will be referred to the coroner.
