A former manager of the Olympic Village camp, where a child died, has been arrested in Montenegro
This was announced by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko.
The former director of the Olympic Village children’s camp was detained on 21 June in Montenegro at the request of the Ukrainian authorities.
Following this, a court in Montenegro issued an extradition arrest warrant for the woman. This means she will be held in custody whilst the matter of her transfer to Ukraine is being considered.
According to Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, the prosecution service is finalising the necessary procedures to return the suspect to Ukraine.
The case concerns the death of a 10-year-old boy at the Olympic Village children’s camp in the Kyiv region.
According to the investigation, the tragedy occurred on 3 August 2023 in the village of Khodosivka, Obukhiv District. The child died whilst swimming in a lake on the camp’s grounds.
Ukrainska Pravda, citing case files, reported that the victim was 10-year-old Vanya Goncharuk from the Odesa region. According to this information, the coach took the children to swim in a lake 9 metres deep and left them without proper supervision. The boy could not swim.
What the camp’s former director is accused of
The former camp director was served with a notice of suspicion following the child’s death. According to the investigation, she is accused of breaching health and safety legislation, which led to serious consequences.
After the charges were announced, the woman was outside Ukraine. As a result, she was placed on an international wanted list, and Interpol issued a Red Notice.
What is known about the coach’s case
Separately, in this case, the court is already considering the indictment against the camp coach.
He is charged under Part 3 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — endangering a child, resulting in the death of a minor.
According to the prosecution, the coach was specifically responsible for organising the children’s stay during their holiday.
What the prosecution says
Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko has stated that he is keeping the case under his personal supervision.
He emphasised that the child’s death cannot be treated merely as an episode in criminal proceedings, and that fleeing abroad will not help the accused evade responsibility.
The Olympic Village case has been ongoing since 2023 and concerns the safety of children at private camps, the responsibility of the administration and oversight of the organisation of the holiday.
The extradition of the former director could allow Ukrainian investigators and the court to continue examining the case against the camp’s management, which, according to the investigation, may have committed breaches that led to the child’s death.
