The Trump administration sees peace with Russia as a way of countering China
The administration of US President Donald Trump believes that encouraging Russia to end the war in Ukraine could contribute to a shift in the global order and weaken China’s role.
In Washington, it is suggested that economic rapprochement with Russia and the attraction of American investment could shift the balance of power and create a different configuration of relations with China.
According to an administration spokesperson, seeking a ‘path to rapprochement with Russia’ could ensure ‘a different balance of power with China’, which would be beneficial for the US.
At the same time, it is noted that this strategy is causing concern in Ukraine. One Ukrainian official stressed that similar approaches had been tried before and had failed to yield results.
According to him, Russia and China share a common stance regarding the United States as a symbol of democracy.
The article also notes that negotiations regarding Ukraine are viewed as part of a broader US foreign policy strategy aimed at countering China’s influence.
Among such steps, the article mentions pressure on the Cuban government, actions regarding Venezuela, as well as the issue of China’s cooperation with Latin American countries.
Furthermore, Washington is focusing on the energy aspect. It is estimated that China obtains oil from Venezuela, Iran and Russia at prices below market rates.
Despite this, experts express doubts about the effectiveness of such an approach. They believe that the partnership between Moscow and Beijing remains strong.
China, for its part, reaffirms the importance of cooperation with Russia. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that relations between the two countries remain strong.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also noted that Russia’s dependence on China is not in the interests of the US and its allies, though he acknowledged the difficulty of severing these ties.
