Alexei Dyumin is said to be one of Putin’s possible successors
TSN reports this, citing an interview given by Anna Labushevska, an expert on Russian politics, to the Polish publication Wiadomości.
Why is Dyumin’s name being mentioned in particular?
According to Labushevskaya, informal discussions are ongoing within Putin’s inner circle regarding who might lead Russia in the future. She named Alexei Dyumin as one of the most likely candidates; he served as governor of the Tula Region from 2016 to 2024 and currently works as an aide to the President of the Russian Federation and secretary of the State Council. The expert claims that Dyumin can count on the support of the so-called ‘security forces’, for whom his rise to power would mean a strengthening of their own influence.
Is Putin preparing a successor?
According to Labushevskaya, Vladimir Putin has no intention of stepping down from power in the near future and is unlikely to publicly name his successor.
“If Putin himself were to name someone or even hint at a possible successor, the balance of power within the Russian elite would immediately shift. Everyone would start to orient themselves towards that particular person,” she noted.
According to the expert, this is precisely why we should not expect an official announcement of a potential successor whilst Putin is still alive.
What, in the expert’s view, will not change after Putin
Labushevska believes that, regardless of who leads Russia after Putin, the foundations of the current political system will remain unchanged. In her view, the main priority for the Russian business elite will continue to be making profits, whilst the political elite will seek to retain power and access to resources.
