A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge during a festive fireworks display
This was reported by Channel 24.
What happened on the Brooklyn Bridge
According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out on the pedestrian section of the bridge, where pyrotechnic equipment had been set up for a festive show. Thick smoke rose above the bridge, and firefighters and other emergency services arrived at the scene promptly. Despite the incident, there was no panic amongst the spectators.
Were there any casualties?
According to preliminary reports, no one was injured in the fire. Whilst the fire was being brought under control, the Brooklyn Bridge was temporarily closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Once the emergency services had completed their work, traffic began to resume gradually.
What the emergency services are saying
The New York Fire Department noted that such incidents are extremely rare during large-scale fireworks displays. That is precisely why the area around the fireworks launch sites is always cordoned off in advance and spectators are not allowed in, in order to minimise risks in the event of an emergency.
