On 5 July 2026, a grenade exploded in the Podilskyi district of the Odesa region whilst a moped driver’s documents were being checked. Two police officers and the man himself were injured; according to preliminary reports, he was the one who triggered the explosion

This was reported by the Odesa Regional Police.

The incident occurred after a moped was stopped

The incident took place on 5 July. A patrol police crew stopped the moped rider for a breach of the Highway Code. Whilst checking his identity, the officers established that the 52-year-old man was on unauthorised leave from his military unit.

According to preliminary information, he then produced a grenade and began threatening to detonate it. A few seconds later, an explosion was heard.

Three people were injured

Both police officers at the scene, as well as the man himself, were injured in the explosion. No information regarding their condition has been released at this stage.

The police are establishing the full circumstances

Investigators and forensic experts were working at the scene to establish the circumstances of the incident. Once the initial investigative measures have been completed, the police will determine the final legal classification of the incident.
