Argentina cruised to top of the group
Despite making extensive changes to the line-up, Lionel Scaloni’s side controlled the run of play. Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a skilfully taken free-kick. Shortly afterwards, Lautaro Martínez doubled Argentina’s lead by converting a penalty.
After the break, Jordan pulled one back — in the 55th minute, Musa Al-Tamari met a cross from the wing and gave his team hope of a comeback.
However, the reigning world champions had the final say. Lionel Messi came on in the 60th minute, and by the 80th he had spectacularly converted a free-kick, setting the final score at 3–1.
Argentina won all three of their group stage matches with a combined goal difference of 8–1 and qualified for the round of 16 in first place. Their next opponents will be Cape Verde.
For Jordan, this was their debut World Cup. The team finished the tournament without picking up any points, but managed to score in each of their three matches.
