Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced his resignation and called for early elections
He made this statement during a rally of his supporters in Belgrade, according to Reuters.
Resignation amid protests
Vučić stated that he would remain president for a few more weeks, after which he would step down. At the same time, he announced that he would take part in the election campaign of his Serbian Progressive Party and support it in the snap elections. However, the president did not specify exactly when he would resign or when parliament would be dissolved, without which it is impossible to hold snap parliamentary elections.
The announcement came after nearly a year and a half of anti-government protests, which began following the collapse of a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024. Sixteen people died in that incident. Protesters link the tragedy to corruption and irregularities in the implementation of state infrastructure projects.
Will Vučić remain in power?
Despite his resignation announcement, political analysts do not believe that Vučić will leave politics for good. They estimate that, should his party win the election, he could return to power as prime minister. Vucic himself has not previously ruled out such a scenario. In an interview, he stated that after his presidential term ends, he may return to party politics or head the government.
Serbia between the EU and Russia
Serbia remains a candidate for accession to the European Union, yet at the same time maintains close political and economic ties with Russia and China. The European Union has repeatedly emphasised that, in order to advance accession negotiations, Belgrade must step up the fight against corruption, ensure the independence of the judiciary, guarantee free elections and align its foreign policy with the EU’s position.
Meanwhile, the opposition accuses Vučić and his inner circle of corruption and of exerting pressure on political opponents and the independent media. The Serbian President and his allies reject these allegations.
