Belgium detained the tanker Ethera, part of Russia's shadow fleet
The Belgian army intercepted the oil tanker Ethera off the coast of Ostend around midnight. The 180-metre-long vessel, built in 2008, was sailing under the flag of Guinea and was arriving from the English Channel.
According to RTBF, the tanker belongs to the "shadow fleet" — a network of ships operating outside international rules to circumvent economic sanctions, particularly those against Russian oil exports. Since October 2025, the ship has been on the European list of ships whose activities should be "restricted" because they are part of the "shadow fleet of oil tankers or contribute to Russia's energy revenues."
Defence Minister Theo Francken said that Operation Blue Invasion was carried out by the Belgian armed forces with the support of the French military. The ship is being escorted to the port of Zeebrugge, where it will be arrested. According to him, this is the first such operation for Belgium.
Prime Minister Bart De Wever said that Belgium would ensure compliance with international maritime law and respond to violations of the security of its territorial waters.
Minister of Justice and the North Sea Annelies Verlinden noted that this is the first time a tanker has been intercepted at sea on the basis of intelligence that identified it as a ship flying a false flag.
According to the US Treasury Department, Ethera is on the sanctions list and is linked to a "vast maritime empire" controlled by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani. He is the son of Ali Shamkhani, senior adviser to Iran's supreme leader. In July 2025, the US linked the vessel to this structure.
The article also mentions that on 22 January, France, with the support of Britain, detained the tanker Grinch off the coast of Spain after checking documents for a false flag. Later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that French President Emmanuel Macron had informed him of his intention to release the tanker due to legal requirements.
