Almost 450 flights were cancelled and delayed at Schiphol Airport due to bad weather
At Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam, nearly 450 flights were cancelled and delayed due to snow and gusty winds on Friday. According to the airport, the airlines cancelled 56 flights for departure and 58 for arrival, and more than 330 flights were delayed from several minutes to several hours. This was reported by The Public with reference to Nltimes.
Eurocontrol, the European air traffic control centre, warned of very high delays and noted that all flights to and from Amsterdam could be affected during the day. The bad weather was caused by Cyclone Anna, which brought winter precipitation and strong winds to the Benelux countries and parts of Central Europe.
Wind gusts of up to 85 kilometres per hour were recorded in the airport area. The national weather service KNMI issued a warning about slippery roads. The A5 motorway near the airport was temporarily closed due to the accident. Disruptions were also reported at Eindhoven and Rotterdam-Hague airports.
Passengers are urged to check the status of flights before travelling and take into account difficult weather conditions.
