Church holiday on 6 July 2026: what not to do on Sysoi’s Day
The Venerable Sisoes the Great lived in Egypt in the 4th–5th centuries.
On 6 July 2026, according to the New Julian calendar, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates the Venerable Sisoes the Great and the Venerable Sisoes, the hermit of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. In folk tradition, this day is known as Siso’s Day and is associated with preparing the farm for the new harvest, weather omens and a number of ancient customs.

The Venerable Sisoes the Great lived in Egypt during the 4th–5th centuries. He was one of the most famous hermits of early Christianity and a disciple of the Venerable Anthony the Great. After the death of his mentor, he settled in his cave, where he devoted his life to prayer, fasting and spiritual asceticism. Church tradition attributes to the saint the gift of miracle-working, in particular the healing of the sick and the resurrection of a dead boy.

On this same day, the Church also commemorates the Venerable Siso, a skhimnik of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, who lived in the Far Caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

What to do on 6 July

According to church tradition, on this day believers pray for spiritual strength, peace of mind, a good harvest, blessings on their work and help in overcoming life’s difficulties.

In folk tradition, Sysoi’s Day was considered a time to prepare cellars and storerooms for the new harvest. It was also at the beginning of July that people began harvesting blackcurrants, from which they made jam and dried the leaves for tea. According to an old belief, the morning dew on this day was considered to have healing properties.

What not to do on 6 July

The Church urges people to avoid quarrels, lies, envy, greed, laziness and refusing to help those in need.

In folk beliefs, a number of everyday taboos were also associated with this day. In particular, it was advised not to:

• rushing into important matters;
• counting money or entering into financial agreements;
• quarrelling with loved ones;
• refusing to help those in need.

A separate custom concerned housework. According to folk beliefs, the task of cleaning cellars and storerooms was entrusted solely to the head of the household. It was believed that women should not carry out such heavy work on this day, although this tradition stems specifically from folk beliefs and is not a church precept.

Folk omens for 6 July

Our ancestors believed that on this day, nature gave clues as to what the weather would be like in the near future:

• a bright white moon — a cold spell without rain;
• yellow clouds — a thunderstorm;
• morning mist over the ground — rain;
• trees beginning to turn yellow — autumn will come early;
• a bountiful raspberry harvest — a cold winter.

Who celebrates their name day
