The National Bank of Ukraine has put a new commemorative 5-hryvnia coin into circulation, dedicated to the Ukrainian folk tale of Kyrylo Kozhum'yak.

This is reported by the National Bank of Ukraine in its catalogue of numismatic products and in the section on the issue of commemorative coins.

The coin is entitled ‘Ukrainian Folk Tales: “Kyrylo Kozhumyaka”’ and forms part of the ‘Spiritual Treasures of Ukraine’ series. It was put into circulation on 29 June 2026.

What is depicted on the new NBU coin

The obverse of the coin features three scenes from the tale of Kyrylo Kozhumyaka. They are separated by stylised hemp ropes and depict key episodes of the story: Kyrylo Kozhumyaka’s craft, the children’s plea for help, and the princess’s enslavement by the serpent.

The upper part of the obverse features the logo of the NBU Banknote and Coin Mint, the inscription ‘Ukraine’ and the small State Emblem of Ukraine. At the bottom right are the year of minting — 2026, the denomination of 5 hryvnias and the inscription ‘Kyrylo Kozhumyaka’.

The reverse depicts a scene of Kyrylo Kozhumyaka’s duel with the serpent. The National Bank explains that this composition symbolises the confrontation between human strength, will and justice against destructive evil.

Who was Kyrylo Kozhumyaka?

Kyrylo Kozhumyaka is a hero of Ukrainian folk tales who embodies strength, hard work, courage and the ability to stand up for others. In the tale, he defeats the serpent and rescues the princess.

The National Bank emphasises that folk tales, passed down from generation to generation, shape the cultural memory and life values of Ukrainians. That is why the coin is dedicated to one of the most famous figures in folklore, who symbolises the triumph of good over evil.
