“The EU’s black sheep”: Fico makes a new statement in Moscow
This is reported by Dennik.N, citing comments made by Robert Fico to Russian journalists.
“I am the black sheep of the European Union”
According to Fico, “several people were interested in this trip”. The Slovak Prime Minister described himself as the “black sheep” of the European Union because of his stance on Russia.
“There is always a black sheep in the European Union. So I belong to this flock. I am against a single, mandatory opinion,” Fico stated.
He also emphasised that he advocates “normal relations” between Slovakia and Russia and wishes to discuss “some practical issues” with Putin.
On respect for Red Army soldiers
Fico stated that he considers it important to honour the Red Army soldiers who died during the liberation of Slovakia.
“There were tens of thousands of young people,” said Fico.
The Prime Minister called on critics of his stance to visit the Slavín memorial in Bratislava and Slovakia’s largest military cemeteries. According to Fico, he does not agree with the “distortion of historical facts” and considers it wrong to ignore the sacrifices made by the peoples of the former USSR in the fight against fascism.
Fico mentioned the assassination attempt and the war in Ukraine
While speaking to journalists, Fico also mentioned the assassination attempt on him in 2024 in Handlová. At the same time, he stated that he supports any initiatives aimed at a ceasefire in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“Dialogue is the key word. We must talk and meet,” said the Slovak Prime Minister.
Fico also expressed hope that the war between Russia and Ukraine “is drawing to a close”. Separately, he commented on the political situation in Hungary, stating that the new government must “find a way” to engage with Péter Mádár.
