Corruption in the Supreme Court: NABU conducts searches
Investigations are also being carried out into the former head of the Supreme Court
The NABU and the SAPO are conducting investigations into a corruption case involving the Supreme Court. The investigation concerns the places of work, residences and vehicles of a number of current and former Supreme Court judges.

This was reported by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine.

On 19 May, the NABU announced that, together with the SAPO, it was conducting investigative activities as part of a corruption case involving the Supreme Court.

According to the bureau, these are being carried out at the places of work and residence of a number of current and former Supreme Court judges, as well as in their vehicles.

In particular, investigative actions are also being carried out against the former head of the Supreme Court, whose case is currently being heard by the High Anti-Corruption Court.

NABU stated that further details would be provided at a later date.

What is known about the case

On 18 May, NABU reported that an accomplice in the transfer of a bribe to the head of the Supreme Court from a businessman – the owner of the “Finance and Credit” group – would face trial.

According to the investigation, in 2002 the businessman acquired a 40.19% stake in the mining and processing plant.

Eighteen years later, the former shareholders challenged the agreement in court. The court of first instance dismissed the claim, but in 2022 the court of appeal overturned this decision and declared the agreement invalid.

The investigation’s version

According to the investigation, in order to avoid losing his shares, between March and April 2023 the businessman transferred US$2.7 million via an intermediary to a lawyer whom NABU describes as a member of the so-called ‘back office’ of the Supreme Court.

According to the investigation, the lawyer was supposed to pass the funds on to the head of the court to ensure the adoption of the “required” decision.

In April 2023, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the businessman.
