Mother's Day in Ukraine: date, history and ideas for the celebration
The official celebration of Mother’s Day in Ukraine was established by Presidential Decree No. 489/99 of 10 May 1999. The date of the holiday is variable and falls on the second Sunday in May each year. It is an important day for each of us to reflect on our roots and honour our mothers as the foundation of the family and the entire nation
A tradition that has united the world
The history of Mother’s Day began over a century ago thanks to the American Anna Jarvis, who sought to immortalise the memory of her mother. In Ukraine, this day has been officially celebrated since 1999, harmoniously blending with the May veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is considered the patroness of all mothers.
In our culture, the image of the mother is sacred. She is the Guardian, who through the ages has passed on language, song and unshakeable faith. It is no coincidence that May is considered her month — a time of nature’s renewal and the blossoming of life.
From heart to heart: tips from our editorial team
We are convinced that the best gift is not a thing, but the feeling that mum is cherished. Here are a few ideas from us on how to make this day unforgettable:
-
An evening of warm memories. Instead of a regular dinner, cook your mum’s favourite dish from your childhood together. The main thing here isn’t the cooking, but a conversation without gadgets and a sincere “do you remember?”.
-
Gifts with a story. If you’re choosing a gift, let it show how much you care. A book by her favourite author, a photo album you’ve put together yourself, or a holiday voucher — these are the things that evoke emotions.
-
The symbolism of flowers. Traditionally, flowers are given on this day. Remember that red petals symbolise life and gratitude, whilst white ones symbolise fond memories of those mothers who are now watching over us from heaven.
-
Your time is the most precious gift. Mums often say that what they miss most is simply spending time together. A walk in the park, sharing a cup of tea, or a long phone call if you’re far away — that is the true meaning of the holiday.
