‘Affordable Medicines’: the programme is set to be significantly expanded from 1 July
This was announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko
Why is this important?
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Ukraine (around 60%). Every year, over 800,000 Ukrainians are diagnosed with coronary heart disease, and nearly 50,000 suffer a heart attack. Regular treatment and adherence to medical protocols can prevent the majority of these tragic cases.
How will it work?
In the second half of the year, the programme will cover all necessary medicines for the outpatient treatment of heart disease. Medicines will be available in two ways:
-
Free of charge (fully reimbursed by the state);
-
With a partial co-payment.
An electronic prescription remains mandatory to obtain medicines.
Scale of the programme
To date, over 6.18 million Ukrainians have already benefited from the ‘Affordable Medicines’ scheme. Medicines are dispensed at 17,348 pharmacies across the country. The list currently comprises 748 items, with heart medicines being the most in demand among patients.
The Ministry of Health has already begun consultations with the pharmaceutical market to ensure the smooth launch of the updated programme from mid-summer.
