Earthquake in Venezuela: 920 dead and hundreds trapped under the rubble
This is according to the BBC.
The death toll continues to rise
Rescue workers have been working at the scene of the tragedy for several days, clearing the rubble of the collapsed buildings. Hundreds of local and international specialists are involved in the search operation.
According to the authorities, people may still be trapped under the rubble, so the death toll could rise further.
The state of La Guaira has suffered the most damage. Residential areas, hospitals, transport infrastructure and the international airport have been damaged there.
The damage is estimated at billions of dollars
According to preliminary estimates, the disaster has damaged or completely destroyed nearly two million buildings. At least 13 hospitals, 25 shopping centres and over a thousand other infrastructure facilities have been damaged.
The United Nations Development Programme has provisionally estimated the direct economic losses at $6.7 billion. However, experts stress that the final figure will only be known once the assessment of the disaster’s impact has been completed.
The situation is being complicated by numerous aftershocks, which continue to be recorded in the affected areas.
