Netanyahu stated that Israeli troops would remain in Lebanon
Netanyahu made this statement during an address to the Israeli public on 26 June.
What Netanyahu said
According to the Prime Minister, Israeli forces will remain in the security zone until Hezbollah is disarmed and no longer poses a threat to Israel.
“The most important thing is that Israel remains in the security zone in southern Lebanon. This is a major achievement, and it will remain in place until Hezbollah is disarmed and no longer poses a threat to the State of Israel,” Netanyahu said.
He also described the agreements reached as “a serious blow to Iran”.
What agreements have the parties reached?
Netanyahu announced that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) would allow the Lebanese army to begin organising and taking control of certain territories.
In addition, on the recommendation of the military command, there are plans to establish two pilot zones. One of these will be located south of the Litani River outside the security zone, and the other north of the Litani. According to the Prime Minister, part of the second zone will lie within the extended security zone that Israel has established in recent months.
Background
Negotiations between Israel, Lebanon and the US have been taking place in Washington for some time. One of the key topics was the situation in southern Lebanon following the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah militants, as well as security issues along the shared border.
