Former Moldovan Prime Minister Filat put on international wanted list after sentencing in France
The Interpol office in Paris has put former Prime Minister Vlad Filat on the international wanted list, who was sentenced to two years in prison in France in a corruption-related money laundering case. The request for the wanted list was filed on 26 December, which was confirmed by the General Inspectorate of the Police of Moldova. This was reported by The Public with reference to Newsmaker.
The French court found that in 2012-2014, Filat and his ex-wife purchased real estate in France, particularly in the Haute-Savoie region, using funds from a Canadian company. In 2011, this company was awarded a contract to manage the National Lottery of Moldova when Filat was head of the government.
The court concluded that the former prime minister deliberately concealed the origin of the funds, which, according to the investigation, were obtained through corruption. In addition to two years in prison, he was fined 100,000 euros. An arrest warrant has also been issued as Filat failed to appear at the court hearing.
Filat's ex-wife was sentenced to 18 months' suspended imprisonment and a fine of 150 thousand euros. The court ordered both to pay Moldova 10 thousand euros in compensation for moral damages.
At the same time, according to the Constitution of Moldova, its citizens are not subject to extradition. Filat himself and the leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova called the verdict politically motivated and filed an appeal.
