The era of interceptor drones: Ukraine is radically overhauling its air defence system

Ukraine has embarked on a major overhaul of its air defence system. Expensive missiles are being replaced by interceptor drones, private initiatives and artificial intelligence, enabling the country to effectively repel large-scale attacks by the Russian Federation

Interceptor drones: P1-SUN and Terra A1

The main advantage of the new drones is their cost. Using interceptors against ‘Shaheds’ is significantly cheaper than launching conventional air defence missiles.

Two key developments are currently in the testing and implementation phase:

  • P1-SUN: a budget drone optimised for mass production. It operates at low and medium altitudes and is capable of responding symmetrically to waves of enemy drones.

  • Terra A1: a project developed in collaboration with the Japanese company Terra Drone. The drone is designed for mass production and the destruction of multiple targets at medium ranges.

Modern models are equipped with thermal imaging cameras and automatic guidance systems, which minimise the human factor.

Private air defence and the role of artificial intelligence

A unique trend is emerging in Ukraine — the creation of private air defence systems. Companies and start-ups are developing local radar systems, anti-drone systems and mobile anti-aircraft installations. These solutions operate within a single network with state forces, strengthening the protection of specific targets.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a key driver of innovation. It is being integrated for:

  1. Automatic recognition of aerial objects.

  2. Creating autonomous interception algorithms.

  3. Rapidly managing diverse weapons systems within a single network.

War as a testing ground for innovation

Ukraine has effectively become a global hub for military technology, where the journey from concept to combat deployment takes just a few months. Real-world testing under conditions of constant attack allows for the immediate refinement of software and drone design.

Experts note that the future of air defence lies in a flexible combination of powerful anti-aircraft missile systems with thousands of cheap and smart hunter drones.
