Fico will meet Putin on 9 May, but will not attend the parade
This was reported by sme.
Robert Fico has confirmed his trip to Moscow on 9 May. According to him, during the visit he plans to lay flowers at the grave of the unknown soldier of the Red Army and hold a brief meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the same time, the Slovak Prime Minister denied that he intends to attend the military parade in Moscow.
“I will lay flowers at the grave of the unknown soldier of the Red Army, as a token of gratitude for our liberation on behalf of the Slovak people, and I am due to have a brief meeting with President Putin. That is all. I am not going to any military parade,” Fico stated.
He also noted that the format of this visit would be similar to his previous trips.
Meeting with Zelensky
The Slovak Prime Minister is currently attending the European Political Community summit in Yerevan. There, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Previously, Fico had repeatedly expressed scepticism regarding European countries’ support for Ukraine and advocated for the restoration of political relations with Russia.
On 2 May, Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with Robert Fico. The Ukrainian president emphasised the importance of strong relations between the two countries, adding that both he and Fico were interested in this.
Fico recently stated that, despite differences on certain issues, he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are keen to develop friendly relations between the two countries.
Parade in Moscow
This year’s parade in Moscow is to take place in a scaled-down format – without military equipment. The Kremlin explained this decision by citing the “current situation”.
The Russian Ministry of Defence has officially confirmed that the traditional parade of military equipment on Red Square will be completely absent. The ministry cited the “current operational situation” as the reason.
Earlier, the Russian dictator’s aide, Yuri Ushakov, stated that Fico would attend the military parade on 9 May in Moscow. According to Ushakov, the Slovak Prime Minister was to join the “Victory Parade” alongside other “foreign guests”.
“There is a lot of talk about Fico, so I can confirm Fico,” said Ushakov, responding to journalists’ questions about foreign guests at the 9 May parade.
Meanwhile, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed permission for the Slovak Prime Minister to fly to Moscow. This was announced by the Czech Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, Adam Čorgo, in a comment to Novinky.
