Fico and Orbán, according to a Slovak commentator, are undermining the EU from within.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are trying to weaken the European Union from within and are effectively playing into the Kremlin's hands. This assessment was given in a comment to Ukrinform by Beata Balogová, chief columnist for the Slovak publication SME.
According to her, Fico considers Russian President Vladimir Putin an important ally and openly declares his readiness to build political ties not only with the West but also with the East. At the same time, public statements about the need to reform and strengthen the EU, according to Balogová, contradict the real actions of the Slovak prime minister, which contribute to the weakening of the bloc's unity.
The observer also recalled that after visits to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, Fico publicly expressed his views on the effectiveness of a one-party system of government. Against this backdrop, according to Balogova, the majority of Slovak citizens are in favour of maintaining EU membership and do not support the idea of rapprochement with the Kremlin's authoritarian allies.
