The NATO Secretary General has named four countries that are holding up Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance
Rutte made these remarks during his visit to the US.
“At the NATO summit in Washington, when the Alliance was marking its 75th anniversary, an agreement was reached on Ukraine’s irreversible path to NATO. However, the fact is that there are several countries holding this back — Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and the US. I don’t think this issue is on the table at the moment,” said Rutte.
The Secretary-General added that, in his view, the issue of Ukraine’s NATO membership would not be resolved politically at a collective level “in the short term”. And this is an “honest assessment”.
The day before, Rutte met at the White House with US President Donald Trump, who is unhappy with NATO’s involvement in military operations against Iran.
