Greenland rejects the idea of joining the US
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has said that the autonomous territory has no intention of becoming part of the United States of America and does not accept external governance. He said this during a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on 13 January. It was reported by The Guardian.
The head of government stressed that Greenland is not an object for sale or purchase, emphasising that the island's current political course is linked to its being part of the Kingdom of Denmark
Copenhagen's reaction: pressure from an ally
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in turn, said that the country is facing unacceptable political pressure from one of its closest allies. She warned that the situation around Greenland goes beyond bilateral relations and concerns the fundamental principles of international security
According to her, it is about the inadmissibility of changing borders by force, buying territories or subjugating small countries to the will of larger states. Denmark, as Frederiksen emphasised, does not seek confrontation, but its position on the status of Greenland remains unchanged
Security issues and NATO's role
The Danish Prime Minister also said that the North Atlantic Alliance should ensure the defence of Greenland on the same terms as the rest of NATO. She stressed that security guarantees for the island are part of the collective responsibility of the Allies
Asked about possible concessions to the United States, Frederiksen pointed to the long history of partnership and alliance between the two countries, noting that these should remain the basis for further dialogue
Political Initiatives in the USA and Diplomatic Contacts
The topic of Greenland has taken on a new dimension after Republican Congressman Randy Fein registered a bill in the US House of Representatives that would annex the island and grant it statehood
Against this backdrop, a bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers will visit Denmark in the coming days. The visit will take place against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's statements about the possible seizure of Greenland. The delegation will be headed by Senator Chris Coons and will include representatives of both parties in Congress
In addition, the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers are scheduled to meet with US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Copenhagen notes that the initiative to hold talks with the US side came after the rhetoric about a possible revision of the island's status intensified
Context
Greenland has the status of an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and plays a strategic role in the North Atlantic and Arctic. Recent statements by the Greenlandic and Danish authorities indicate an intention to firmly defend the island's current political and legal status amid rising geopolitical tensions
