SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has announced the creation of the world’s largest chip manufacturing facility. The project could cost over $20 billion.

Musk announced this on social media platform X.

American billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to build the world’s largest chip manufacturing plant. The project is expected to cost at least $20 billion.

The Terafab project will bring together Musk’s other companies – Tesla, SpaceX and xAI – into a single entity. Construction is set to begin at the Advanced Technology Fab in Austin, where Tesla’s headquarters are located.

The facility will produce two types of microchips. The first will be used in the Full Self-Driving system and Optimus robots, whilst the second will consist of more powerful chips for space projects.

Musk noted that the current production capacity of chip suppliers does not meet the future needs of his companies.

“We will either build Terafab or we won’t have chips. And we need chips, so we will build Terafab,” said the billionaire.

At the same time, the article points out that Elon Musk has previously announced large-scale initiatives that were never realised. For example, the Hyperloop project, which was actively promoted but never brought to fruition.
