The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has highlighted the consequences of the terrorist attack at the Olenivska prison colony in 2022. According to the agency, more than 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed at the time, and a further 130 were injured.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has reported that, as a result of the terrorist attack at Volnovakha Correctional Colony No. 120 near Olenivka in the summer of 2022, more than 50 Ukrainian defenders were killed and a further 130 were wounded. Some of the prisoners of war who survived the explosion have still not returned home.

Lieutenant General Oleg Ivashchenko, Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, made this statement on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of Ukraine, members of volunteer formations and civilians who were executed, tortured or died in captivity, which is observed on 28 July.

According to Ivashchenko, for four years running now, the name ‘Olenivka’ has been associated with the tragedy of summer 2022.

“In the prison camp where the defenders of Mariupol were being held, the Russians carried out the largest terrorist attack against Ukrainian prisoners of war. More than 50 Ukrainian defenders were killed, and 130 were wounded. Many of those who survived the explosion have not yet returned home. We continue to fight for them and for all those held hostage in Putin’s torture chambers,” he emphasised.

The Main Intelligence Directorate noted that the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War is working tirelessly to secure the return of Ukrainians from Russian captivity, as well as to repatriate the bodies of the fallen.

Ivashchenko called on people to honour the fallen Ukrainian defenders on Remembrance Day by lighting a candle as a sign of mourning.

On 28 July, Ukraine commemorates the defenders of Ukraine, members of volunteer units, and civilians who were executed, tortured or died in captivity.

Also on this day, at 7.00 pm on Independence Square in Kyiv, a memorial event is planned to mark the fourth anniversary of the mass execution by the Russians of Azov prisoners of war in Olenivka.
