In Germany, law enforcement agencies have launched a large-scale operation to locate a man suspected of driving a van into a crowd near the Berlin Pride (Christopher Street Day) events in central Berlin. One person was killed in the attack and a further 16 were injured, several of whom are in a critical condition

This is according to DW.

Police have identified the suspect

According to the police, a warrant has been issued for the arrest of 21-year-old Abdul B. Law enforcement officials stated that the man was known for his links to Islamist circles. However, no information has yet been released regarding his direct involvement with organised terrorist groups.

The incident took place on the evening of 25 July in the Tiergarten area near the Brandenburg Gate, as the Christopher Street Day events – the German name for the annual pride event in support of the LGBT+ community – were drawing to a close. Following the tragedy, the organisers cancelled all the festival’s planned closing events.

Expert: Vehicle-ramming attacks have become a recurring tactic

Rafael Bossong, an expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, stated that the use of vehicles to attack mass gatherings has become a recurring tactic among Islamist extremists in Europe.

According to him, this is already the eighth or ninth such incident. As an example, he cited the terrorist attack in Nice, France, in July 2016, when a lorry ploughed into a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations.

At the same time, Bossong noted that, according to preliminary information, the suspect in the Berlin attack was not a key figure in the Islamist movement. According to him, the man had a criminal record, but the investigation had not uncovered any clear signs of preparations for the attack or public calls for violence.
