Tehran has warned that it will retaliate in the event of strikes on its energy facilities.

Iran has responded to the United States’ tough ultimatum regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has stated that, should there be any attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure, the response will target critical US facilities in the Middle East.

This was reported by The Times of Israel.

The Iranian military emphasised that if the country’s fuel and energy sector were to be targeted, strikes could be launched against US energy, information technology and desalination infrastructure in the region.

It is noted that the Middle East accounts for over 40% of the world’s desalination capacity — approximately five thousand plants. For millions of people, these are the main source of drinking water, so damage to them could cause a large-scale humanitarian crisis.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Iran — to unblock the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Should the demands not be met, he threatened to launch strikes against Iranian power stations, starting with the largest one.

In addition, the US has already carried out an attack on an underground facility near the coast of the Strait of Hormuz, which was used to monitor tanker traffic.
