Iran has reported that a shell has struck the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant
The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran has reported that during the attacks, which Tehran attributes to the US and Israel, a projectile struck the Bushehr nuclear power plant. This was reported by the IRNA news agency.
According to the agency, the incident did not result in any casualties, financial or technical losses, nor did it damage any of the plant’s facilities.
The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran stated that attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities constitute a violation of international norms guaranteeing their inviolability and could have dangerous consequences for regional security, particularly for the Gulf states.
According to the Iranian side, this is not the first such incident. Earlier, on 17 March, a projectile also struck the plant’s grounds during an attack, though no radiation leaks or damage were recorded on that occasion either.
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has called on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint to avoid a nuclear accident.
The state-owned corporation Rosatom reported that there are around 480 Russian workers at the plant. The company noted that it has already carried out two evacuations of personnel since the start of hostilities and is preparing another.
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is Iran’s first nuclear power station. Construction began in 1975 with the participation of Siemens, after which it was suspended and resumed in 1995 with the participation of Rosatom. The first power unit was commissioned in 2013.
