Italy is to allocate a further €1 million to Ukraine for cyber defence
This has been reported by the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.
On 1 July 2026, Italy took over the chairmanship of the Tallinn Mechanism from the United Kingdom for the second half of 2026.
During its chairmanship, the country plans to focus on strengthening the cyber security of Ukraine’s state bodies, protecting critical infrastructure, and the professional development of Ukrainian cyber security specialists.
A new contribution of €1 million will bring Italy’s total funding under the Tallinn Mechanism to €2 million.
Which projects has Italy already funded?
The Italian side has already funded two projects in the Ternopil region totalling nearly €900,000. The funds received were channelled towards modernising digital infrastructure and creating a secure network.
Another project, worth over €570,000, is being implemented in the Odesa region. There, a secure system will be set up for the regional information and analysis centre.
In addition, Italy has funded an analytical review of Ukraine’s National Cybersecurity System for 2025, and has also supported the participation of the Ukrainian youth team in international cybersecurity competitions.
What is the Tallinn Mechanism?
The Tallinn Mechanism was established in December 2023 to coordinate international assistance to Ukraine in the field of cybersecurity.
The initiative comprises 14 partner states. The coordinating country rotates every six months, ensuring the coordination of international support in the field of digital security.
