Two further cases of tropical malaria have been recorded in the Lviv region. The patients had been on holiday in Zanzibar the day before
This was reported by Nataliia Timko-Ivanchenko, Director-General of the Lviv Regional Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to her, the women experienced the first symptoms of the illness two days after returning home. At first, these resembled a common cold, but the infected women subsequently developed a fever, chills and headaches.
The patients are currently under medical supervision at the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Clinical Hospital. They are receiving all necessary treatment. In total, four cases of tropical malaria have been recorded in the region since the start of the year, and in all instances the patients were infected whilst travelling to Zanzibar.
The Director-General reminded everyone that malaria is transmitted through mosquito bites, and that the disease is quite common in Tanzania. There is currently no vaccine against malaria in Ukraine.
What do you need to know about malaria?
Malaria is a dangerous parasitic disease. According to the World Health Organisation, there is a risk of infection in 87 countries worldwide, mainly in Africa, South Asia and the Americas.
The main symptoms include lethargy, headache, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and muscle pain.
Doctors say that malaria can be prevented and the disease can be cured provided you seek medical attention in good time. Before travelling to countries where there is a risk of malaria, it is essential to consult a doctor about chemoprophylaxis. In addition, whilst on holiday, you should make active use of mosquito repellents.
If you become infected, treatment must begin within the first 24 hours of symptoms appearing. In severe cases, malaria can be fatal.
