European Commissioner Marta Kos arrives in Ukraine to promote accession talks
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has begun a two-day visit to Ukraine. In Lviv, she will participate in an informal meeting of EU ministers to discuss progress in accession negotiations and key reforms, including the rule of law. A separate topic will be reconstruction, which the European Union continues to finance.
In the morning, Kos visited a thermal power plant together with Deputy Minister of Energy Olha Yukhymchuk. The facility has been repeatedly shelled by Russia and is being restored with the support of the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. The European Commission emphasises that the reconstruction of the station is an example of EU assistance in strengthening Ukraine's energy resilience, from the repair of critical infrastructure to the development of heat supply and renewable energy.
After that, Kos will meet with representatives of the public sector, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Taras Kachka, and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Oleksandr Kornienko. They will discuss EU enlargement policy and the role of civil society in supporting reforms.
On Tuesday, the Commissioner will take part in a ceremony to honour fallen defenders, after which she will make a statement to the press. She will then join a meeting of the General Affairs Council, where she will discuss the progress of Ukraine's accession negotiations with Kachka and Danish Minister Maria Bjerre. A joint press conference is scheduled after the meeting.
