Canada may waive visa requirements for Ukrainians for 90 days: details
The resolution was adopted at the Liberal Party of Canada’s national convention in Montreal. In the document, the party explicitly calls on the federal government to remove the requirement for a visitor visa for Ukrainians travelling to Canada for a short period.
The text of the resolution states that Ukrainians should be allowed to make short-term trips to Canada without a standard visitor visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The authors of the document explain this as a show of support for Ukraine, the need to strengthen family, educational, cultural and business ties, and a desire to simplify travel for Ukrainian citizens.
An important point is that this does not refer to visa-free travel that has already been introduced. As things stand, Canada’s official rules remain unchanged: Ukrainian citizens still require a visa to enter, not merely an electronic authorisation. This is explicitly stated on the Canadian government’s website.
That is precisely why it is more accurate to speak of a political step towards possible visa liberalisation, rather than a government decision that has already been taken. A party resolution does not automatically trigger a new regime. For the changes to actually take effect, the Canadian federal government must separately amend entry rules and immigration procedures.
Separately, this story is significant also due to the changing overall context for Ukrainians in Canada. The special CUAET programme for the emergency entry of Ukrainians following the outbreak of full-scale war ceased accepting new applications back in 2023, and from 1 April 2026, special measures will focus primarily on those already in Canada. In other words, the current resolution brings a specific issue back onto the political agenda: simple, short-term visits by Ukrainians without the full visa procedure.
If the Canadian government supports this model, Ukrainians will be able to travel to the country for short periods much more easily than at present. However, at present, this is merely support from the ruling party, not an existing visa-free regime.
As a reminder, from 10 April 2026, a new entry and exit procedure came fully into force at the external borders of the 29 European countries operating the Entry/Exit System. For Ukrainians travelling for short periods, this means the end of manual stamps in passports, the first biometric registration and a new digital record of journeys.
