China has accused a Japanese soldier of trespassing at its embassy in Tokyo
Bloomberg reports this, citing a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
China has reported an incident on the premises of its embassy in Tokyo. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, a man who identified himself as a serving officer in the Japanese Self-Defence Forces climbed over the embassy wall on Tuesday morning and forced his way inside.
Beijing claims that this man threatened to kill Chinese diplomats “in the name of God”. The Chinese side described the incident as posing a serious threat to the safety of diplomatic personnel and the diplomatic premises, and characterised it as “extremely egregious”.
China’s Foreign Ministry stated that it had already lodged a “strong representation” and a protest with Japan. Beijing is demanding that the Japanese side fully investigate the circumstances, hold those involved to account, and provide China with a “responsible response”.
Japan has not yet provided official confirmation of the details of the incident. A spokesperson for the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force headquarters stated that the agency is still gathering information regarding the alleged incident and declined to comment further.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of a sharp deterioration in relations between China and Japan. According to Bloomberg, a new round of tensions began back in November 2025 following statements by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that the country could be militarily involved if China attempted to seize Taiwan by force.
Following this, China stepped up diplomatic and economic pressure on Tokyo. Bloomberg reports that last month Beijing blacklisted 20 Japanese companies following Takaichi’s convincing victory, which strengthened her political mandate.
At a briefing on 24 March, Lin Jian also linked the incident to the broader political context. According to him, this event demonstrates “the rampant spread of far-right ideas and forces in Japan”, “the growing danger of a new militarism” and the Japanese government’s “misguided policies” regarding history, Taiwan and other key issues in Sino-Japanese relations.
