Kostyuk conquers Madrid: a new title and a record-breaking ranking

The match lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes. Marta started the match in top form, taking the first set 6-3. The second set proved to be a test of endurance: the Ukrainian was trailing 1-3, then saved two set points at 4-5 and ultimately clinched victory with a phenomenal drop shot.
Emotions and her trademark celebration
Immediately after the final point, Marta could not hold back her tears of joy. Once she had composed herself a little, she fulfilled her promise — performing a perfect backflip right on the Madrid clay to the wild cheers of the crowd. While the Ukrainian was celebrating, her opponent, Mirra Andreeva, wept in despair, seeking solace in talking to her team.
The new queen of clay: records and rankings
This victory was Kostyuk’s third at WTA level (after Brisbane and Rouen) and the most significant of her professional career.

On her way to the trophy, Marta navigated an extremely tough draw, defeating Yulia Putintseva, Anastasia Potapova, world number five Jessica Pegula and Czech star Linda Nosková.
