The Kremlin is preparing energy blackmail: substations supplying Ukrainian nuclear power plants are under threat
The aggressor state Russia is intensifying its hybrid pressure on Ukraine, considering the possibility of strikes on power transmission substations, which are key to the stable operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. The aim of such actions is not only to cause an energy collapse within the country, but also to engage in political blackmail — an attempt to force Ukraine to accept unacceptable conditions for ending the war. This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine.
According to available information, Moscow is simultaneously planning to intensify its intimidation of European and Western countries. The Kremlin is trying to curb further military and air defence support for Ukraine, in particular its ability to effectively repel massive air attacks on critical infrastructure.
In the event of the destruction or disabling of such substations, Russia seeks to disconnect the power units of nuclear power plants from Ukraine's integrated power system. This could lead to large-scale power and heat outages, affecting the civilian population throughout the country.
As of mid-January 2026, Russian forces have been recorded conducting reconnaissance of at least ten critical energy infrastructure facilities in nine regions of Ukraine. These actions are seen as a preparatory stage for potential attacks.
Experts emphasise that attempts to destroy or paralyse nuclear power generation by indirect means are further confirmation of the genocidal nature of Russia's war against Ukraine, deliberately endangering millions of civilians.
