Le Pen advocates distancing herself from the Alliance
The politician announced her intentions during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Sweden. According to Le Pen, France should remain a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, but must withdraw from its integrated military structure. She also expressed dissatisfaction with European countries’ dependence on US decisions in the field of security. NATO’s integrated military command ensures the coordination and cooperation of the armed forces of the Alliance’s 32 member states.
The French government has described this position as irresponsible
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot criticised Le Pen’s statement, calling calls to withdraw from NATO’s military command unfounded and irresponsible. According to him, against the backdrop of Russian aggression and discussions regarding the future role of the US in European security, allies need to strengthen cooperation rather than distance themselves from joint structures. Discussions about France’s role in NATO have been ongoing for some time. In 1966, President Charles de Gaulle withdrew the country from the Alliance’s joint military command, and the return to the structure took place only in 2009 during the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy. Marine Le Pen’s participation in the 2027 presidential election currently depends on a decision by the Court of Appeal, which is expected later this year.
