Lionel Messi has set a new World Cup record for the longest scoring streak
Argentina striker Lionel Messi has set a new World Cup record for the longest scoring streak.
The 39-year-old forward, who plays for Inter Miami CF, has become the first player in history to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches.
Messi achieved this new feat in the third match of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup against Jordan. The Argentine scored with a direct free-kick, and his team won 3–1.
Lionel Messi’s goal-scoring streak began back in the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Australia, which Argentina won 2–1.
With this feat, the Argentine has surpassed the achievements of France’s Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho. The Frenchman scored in six consecutive matches at the 1958 World Cup, whilst the Brazilian repeated this feat at the 1970 World Cup.
At this year’s World Cup, Messi has already scored six goals and is the clear leader in the scoring charts. In total, he has scored 19 goals at World Cups, which is an all-time tournament record.
Argentina topped Group J with nine points. Austria and Algeria finished second and third respectively, both on four points, whilst Jordan finished the group stage without picking up any points.
In the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, Argentina will face Cape Verde. The match will take place on 4 July at 01:00 Kyiv time.
The winner of this tie will face the winner of the Australia v Egypt match in the round of 16.
Argentina go into the knockout stages as the reigning world champions. In the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Lionel Scaloni’s side defeated France on penalties.
