Marine Le Pen has confirmed that she will stand as a candidate in the 2027 French presidential election
She made this statement during a broadcast on TF1.
According to Le Pen, her election campaign began “this very evening” — 7 July.
“Tonight, I am a candidate in the presidential election,” Le Pen said.
She added that she would not be campaigning whilst wearing the electronic tag she is required to wear following a decision by the Court of Appeal. To this end, she will lodge an appeal to the Court of Cassation, which will suspend the court’s decision.
“I have stated that I will not campaign whilst under house arrest with an electronic tag. But as I have the option of appealing to the Court of Cassation, I will campaign without the electronic tag,” said the politician.
The public prosecutor at the Paris Court of Appeal noted in an interview with RTL that she would decide next week on a possible appeal to the Court of Cassation concerning Marine Le Pen. The deadline for the parties to lodge an appeal is 20 July.
The Marine Le Pen case
Marine Le Pen is a French MP and one of the leaders of the far-right National Rally party, which advocates strengthening France’s ties with Russia and opposes aid to Ukraine. She has stood as a presidential candidate on several occasions – in 2012, 2017 and 2022 – and had also intended to take part in the 2027 campaign.
However, in July 2024, the Paris public prosecutor’s office launched a judicial investigation into Le Pen on suspicion of illegal financing of her presidential campaign during the 2022 election. The politician and her associates were accused of paying the salaries of National Rally staff using funds intended for the European Parliament. In 2024, the court estimated the loss resulting from the defendants’ actions at €2.9 million.
On 31 March 2025, Le Pen was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for embezzlement of public funds. Of these four years, two are suspended, whilst the remaining two involve house arrest with the wearing of an electronic tag. In addition, Le Pen was fined €100,000 and banned from holding public office for five years, effectively ruling her out of the 2027 presidential election.
