Mass protests in Iran: at least 12 dead and large-scale internet restrictions
In Iran, mass protests that erupted in late December amid a deteriorating economic situation continue. According to official figures released on 4 January, at least 12 people were killed in the clashes, including law enforcement officers, DW reports.
Iranian state media report attempts to storm police stations and violent clashes with security forces. According to human rights activists, the number of detainees could reach hundreds, and the number of injured exceeds several dozen. At least six deaths were reported earlier, but these figures are gradually being revised upwards.
Amid the unrest, authorities have restricted access to the Internet across the country. According to international technical observations, Internet traffic in Iran has fallen by about 35 per cent. The authorities used similar measures during the protests in 2009, 2019 and 2022.
The protests began on 28 December with strikes by traders in Tehran and quickly spread to other major cities, turning from economic to political with slogans against the current leadership of the country.
