On 1 April 2026, the Russian Ministry of Defence announced that the Russian Armed Forces had completed their capture of the territory of the self-proclaimed ‘LPR’.

“Units of the ‘West’ military group have completed the liberation of the Luhansk People’s Republic,” the statement reads.

However, according to available monitoring data, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ 3rd Army Corps “Azov” continues to hold a small area in the Luhansk region between the destroyed villages of Nadiya and Novoyegorivka. In recent months, the Russian army has not launched an offensive in this area.

Back in July 2022, the then Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the capture of Ukraine’s Luhansk region.

On 30 June 2025, the head of the self-proclaimed ‘LPR’, Leonid Pasichnyk, stated that ‘two days ago, a report was received stating that the territory of the Luhansk People’s Republic had been 100% liberated’.

In October 2025, President Putin said that Russian troops had only 0.13% of the “LPR” territory left to capture.
