Moscow was attacked by drones overnight; the Russian authorities have reported a large-scale raid
On the night of 22 June, Moscow came under a massive drone attack. The Russian authorities reported that dozens of drones were allegedly heading towards the Russian capital.
The BBC reports that Russian air defences were active throughout the night. Subsequently, the Russian side reported that several more drones had been shot down.
Reports of alleged further shoot-downs emerged several times throughout the night and into the morning. According to the Russian authorities, at least 70 drones had been destroyed by morning. Meanwhile, some Russian media outlets reported that between 03:00 and 10:00, 80 drones were allegedly shot down as they approached Moscow.
Emergency services are working at the crash sites, according to Russian officials. No official information has been released regarding damage or casualties.
Restrictions were imposed on operations at Moscow’s air hub following the attack. Flight restrictions have been introduced at Sheremetyevo Airport. Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports were handling arrivals and departures on a case-by-case basis. Aeroflot also announced schedule adjustments and the cancellation of some flights.
According to Russian sources, this is already the fourth large-scale drone attack on Moscow in the past week.
Earlier, on 18 June, Ukraine launched a massive strike on Moscow. At the time, the Russian side reported a record-breaking air raid since the start of the full-scale war. One of the targets of the attack was the Moscow oil refinery in Kapotnya.
Also, on 6 June, the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in coordination with the Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Forces, the Security Service of Ukraine and the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, carried out a strike on the Moscow oil refinery.
