Iran’s new supreme leader has rejected proposals to ease tensions with the US
This was reported on 17 March by a senior Iranian official who wished to remain anonymous. According to him, Khamenei’s stance on retaliation against the United States and Israel is very hardline and serious. This was stated during the first meeting on foreign policy, though it is not clear whether he was present in person.
According to the source, the Supreme Leader stated that now is not the time for peace until the United States and Israel are brought to their knees, admit defeat and pay compensation.
The war between the US and Israel against Iran has been ongoing for three weeks now. At least 2,000 people have been killed during this time, and there is no end in sight to the conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed. US allies have not supported President Donald Trump’s call to help restore shipping in this strategic waterway. This has led to rising energy prices and fears of inflation.
Earlier, on 14 March, three sources told Reuters that Donald Trump’s administration had rejected attempts by allies in the Middle East to initiate diplomatic talks to end the war.
