Over 700 million hryvnias will be allocated for the safety of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Exclusion Zone
This was announced by Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal.
On 10 June, the Verkhovna Rada adopted amendments to the state budget. These provide for additional funding for the safe operation of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the exclusion zone.
Over 525 million hryvnias have been allocated to maintain the safe condition of the Chernobyl NPP’s power units and the ‘Shelter’ facility, as well as to support the work of the plant’s staff.
A further 72 million hryvnias will be allocated to maintaining the environmentally safe condition of the exclusion zone. These funds will also be used for monitoring the territory and fire prevention measures.
Separately, over 127 million UAH has been earmarked to settle social obligations towards workers in the coal industry.
The budget also includes separate funding for cyber security projects and the development of the Ministry of Energy’s IT infrastructure.
Chernobyl is being restored following Russian attacks
In February 2025, a Russian strike drone carrying a high-explosive warhead struck a shelter at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Following this, the government allocated over 1.5 billion UAH to address the consequences of the attack. In February 2026, a further 1.6 billion UAH was allocated for these purposes.
In April 2026, Ukraine agreed with the EBRD on an initial €30 million for the initial phase of restoring the Chernobyl nuclear power plant’s protective containment structure, which was damaged following the Russian attack.
These funds were to be used for:
- assessing the damage;
- preparing technical solutions;
- design;
- procurement of the necessary equipment.
Separately, the EBRD stated that at least €500 million would be required to fully restore the facility by 2030.
On 7 June, Russia struck a facility near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. As a result of the explosion, the spent nuclear fuel reception and reloading building, as well as the administrative building of the International Atomic Energy Agency, were damaged.
