Ukraine and Russia are continuing negotiations on a large-scale prisoner-of-war exchange on a 1,000-for-1,000 basis. The United States is involved in the process, acting as a mediator and guarantor of the agreements.

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War has announced that Ukraine has handed over to the Russian side a list for a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange.

The headquarters noted that the lists were compiled based on the length of time Ukrainian servicemen had spent in captivity, the BBC reports.

“Following the results of negotiations mediated by the United States, which took place yesterday, Ukraine has provided the Russian side with a ‘list of 1,000’, compiled on the basis of the length of time spent in captivity,” the statement said.

The Coordination Headquarters also stated that the negotiation process is ongoing.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the United States is actively involved in the process of agreeing the exchange.

According to the president, contacts are currently underway to agree on the details of the exchange.

“Discussions are ongoing at the necessary level to agree on the details of the exchange. The lists have been handed over, and we expect the American side to play an active role in ensuring the implementation of this agreement,” Zelenskyy wrote in a Telegram post.

The day before, the head of state also spoke of discussions with the US regarding guarantees for the implementation of the agreements.

“The 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange is being prepared and must take place. The Americans have undertaken these guarantees,” Zelenskyy said in an evening address.

Moscow and Kyiv had previously agreed to a short-term ceasefire proposed by Washington for the period from 8 to 11 May.

According to a source, the agreements also provide for a prisoner of war exchange on a 1,000-for-1,000 basis on each side.
