The weather in Ukraine leading up to Easter 2026: when will the snow and frosts give way?
On Easter Sunday, 12 April, the weather is expected to become calmer
Cold weather is set to persist in Ukraine until Easter on 12 April, with wet snow, night-time frosts and slippery roads. The coldest days are expected to be 9–11 April, and as Sunday approaches, the weather will gradually improve, although most regions will not yet experience any real warmth.

The forecast is based on the assessments of meteorologist Igor Kibalchich and data from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre.

April has brought a sharp reminder of winter. Arctic air has swept into Ukraine, causing temperatures to drop across almost the entire country, with rain turning to sleet in places. According to Igor Kibalchich, the cold snap has affected all regions since the start of the week, with the most severe period of this cold spell falling on the days leading up to Easter.

On 9 April, cold and wet weather will persist in most regions. In the northern and western regions, light to moderate precipitation is expected, mainly in the form of sleet. The forecaster also warns of snow sticking to the ground and black ice on some sections of the roads. Overnight temperatures will range from -2 to +3 degrees, during the day from +2 to +7, and in the Carpathians it will be around 0. The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre has issued a separate warning about ground frost and, in places, frost in the air.

On 10 April, the weather will begin to settle down slightly, but it is too early to speak of comfortable conditions. Significant precipitation is no longer forecast everywhere: light wet snow mixed with rain is possible in the Carpathians and during the day in the north. Temperatures are expected to range from -3 to +2 degrees at night, +3 to +8 during the day, and up to +11 in the south. According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, frosts will persist on 10–11 April, whilst daytime temperatures in most regions will remain between +3 and +10.

On 11 April, the temperature swings will continue. Light precipitation in the form of rain and sleet is possible across almost the whole country, except for the western regions. Overnight temperatures will again range from -3 to +2 degrees, during the day from +4 to +9, and in the south and Zakarpattia up to +12. This is why roads in the morning at the end of the week may still be slippery, especially where sub-zero temperatures at night combine with precipitation.

On Easter Sunday, 12 April, the weather is expected to become calmer. According to Igor Kibalchich’s forecast, there will be no significant precipitation at night, whilst during the day rain will fall mainly in the southern and western regions, with wet snow possible in the Carpathians. Night-time temperatures will range from -2 to +3 degrees, daytime temperatures from +5 to +10, and in the south from +9 to +12.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre expects Easter weather to be slightly milder. Natalia Golenia, head of the meteorological forecasting department, expects more sunny spells, less precipitation and temperatures above +10 degrees, and in some places even up to +15. In other words, the general trend is already towards warmer weather, but exact figures may still vary depending on the region.

The main conclusion is simple: before the holiday, Ukraine will still have to endure a few cold days with wet snow, frosts and the risk of black ice, but Easter itself should be calmer than the middle of the week. Spring is returning, although without a sudden surge in warmth just yet.

As a reminder, Easter in Kyiv this year is a small test of financial resilience. The simplest Easter cakes in supermarkets cost up to 40 UAH, a standard medium-sized cake usually ranges from 90 to 150 UAH, and in premium patisseries the price is already approaching 2,000 UAH.
