Poland has warned Russia about possible attacks on diplomatic missions in Kyiv
This is stated in a statement from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to Russia’s threats of new strikes on Kyiv and its call for foreign countries to evacuate their diplomats.
Warsaw stated that it consistently regards all Russian attacks on Ukraine, particularly those targeting civilian infrastructure and the population, as acts of unjustified aggression.
“In connection with the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, which calls on foreigners, including diplomats, to leave Kyiv immediately due to plans to strike military targets and decision-making centres, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that it consistently regards all attacks on Ukraine, including those on civilian targets and the civilian population, as acts of unprovoked aggression,” the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
What Poland would consider a deliberate attack
The Polish Foreign Ministry emphasised that Warsaw would regard any possible Russian strike on Polish diplomatic missions in Kyiv as deliberate and intentional.
The ministry also noted that Russia officially refers to the war against Ukraine as a so-called “special military operation”, which, according to its own statements, should be limited to military targets.
“Since Russia, as it itself claims, is not waging a war but merely a so-called ‘special military operation’, which is supposed to be limited to military targets – any attacks on other infrastructure, including diplomatic missions, should be regarded as unfriendly acts,” the Polish Foreign Ministry stated.
International legal consequences
Warsaw stated that such actions by Moscow could have serious international legal consequences.
The Polish Foreign Ministry also noted that Russia’s behaviour “once again undermines the role of this state as a permanent member of the UN Security Council”.
What preceded this
On 25 May, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs threatened to strike Kyiv.
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced possible strikes on defence industry enterprises and decision-making centres.
Moscow linked these threats to an alleged “attack” on a college in the temporarily occupied territory of Luhansk Oblast.
On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
During this conversation, Lavrov also threatened new strikes on targets in Kyiv which, according to the Russian side, are linked to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and called for the evacuation of American diplomats.
Ukraine’s response
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the overall level of threat from Russia to Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities remains the same as in previous years and months.
